Mathilde Gombeaud, Founding partner at BlueNav.

What is your role at BlueNav?

In my role, I focus on embodying the company’s values and defending its image with external stakeholders, including economic, institutional, and media actors. I work on strengthening BlueNav’s visibility and credibility, particularly by participating in strategic events and establishing lasting relationships with our partners.

My goal is also to ensure that BlueNav’s mission — enhancing the boating experience through smart, user-centric solutions for a sustainable future — is clearly communicated and supported.

Why do you think hybridization is the ideal solution for boaters?

Hybridization offers the perfect balance between performance, sustainability, and practicality. It combines the power and range of traditional engines with the environmental and noise-free benefits of electric propulsion. It’s an adaptable solution that meets the diverse needs of modern navigators.

How do you imagine the future of electric boating?

I envision a future where electric and hybrid propulsion become the standard in the boating industry. Advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure will make electric boating more accessible and efficient. Additionally, regulations and public awareness will drive the shift toward sustainable practices. I see a growing ecosystem of renewable energy-powered marinas, integrated smart systems, and boats designed with efficiency and environmental impact in mind.

What is your connection to water and the ocean?

The ocean has always been a source of inspiration and peace for me. Whether it’s boating, swimming, or simply being near the water, I feel a deep connection to its vastness and beauty. This connection drives my commitment to protecting and preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.

Do you think women are well-represented in the maritime industry?

While progress has been made, women are still underrepresented in the maritime industry, particularly in leadership roles and technical positions. However, I believe this is changing, and we’re seeing more initiatives to support and empower women in this field.

Do women bring something different and new to this sector?

Absolutely. Diversity always brings fresh perspectives, and women can contribute unique approaches to leadership, problem-solving, and collaboration. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, women’s participation can inspire more innovative and inclusive practices, ultimately benefiting the sector as a whole. Women often bring a strong focus on sustainability and community, which aligns perfectly with the values of the future maritime world.

Natacha Thiels, Mechatronics Engineer

What is your role at BlueNav?

As a mechatronics engineer, I am part of the electronics design office while also collaborating with the mechanical division. My goal is to work on projects combining mechanics, electronics and programming, in order to have a global vision of product design.

Why do you think hybridization is the ideal solution for boaters?

I haven’t sailed much in my life, and I’ve used electric rather than thermal engines. When running the thermal engine instead of the electric one on the test boat, I realize how quiet and pleasant electric navigation is, which allows you to better appreciate the environment: the birds, the waves and the sound of the water.

What is your connection to water and the ocean?

I really like taking advantage of the ocean to swim, surf, admire the horizon, listen. I also appreciate the moments of serenity it offers, whether sailing or observing the seascapes. This connection reminds me of the importance of preserving these fragile ecosystems and respecting their harmony.

In addition, our Smart features, such as the virtual anchor, meet the need for navigation simplification expressed by sailors.

How do you imagine the future of electric boating?

I imagine that, as in the automotive sector, unified regulations at European level will support the energy transition in the nautical sector.

What is your connection to water and the ocean?

I am originally from Brussels but I have had the privilege of living and working by the ocean for 10 years, whether on the coast of Aquitaine, Brittany or Ireland. The ocean has become essential! I love surfing and winter swimming which invigorates you!
